The Afterglow of Grb 990123 and a Dense Medium
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent observations show that the temporal decay of the R-band afterglow from GRB 990123 steepened about 2.5 days after the burst. We here propose a possible explanation for such a steepening: a shock expanding in a dense medium has undergone the transition from a relativistic phase to a nonrelativistic phase. We find that this model is consistent with the observations if the medium density is about 3 × 10 cm. By fitting our model to the observed optical and X-ray afterglow quantitatively, we further infer the electron and magnetic energy fractions of the shocked medium and find that the two parameters are about 0.1 and 2×10 respectively. The former parameter is near the equipartition value while the latter is about six orders of magnitude smaller than inferred from the GRB 970508 afterglow. We also discuss possibilities that the dense medium can be produced. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts – shock waves

متن کاملEffects of Environment and Energy Injection on Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows
There is growing evidence that some long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) arise from the core collapse of massive stars, and thus it is inevitable that the environments of these GRBs are preburst stellar winds or dense media. We studied, for the first time, the wind model for afterglows based on the Blandford-McKee self-similar solution of a relativistic shock, and suggested that GRB 970616 is an intera...
متن کاملThe puzzling case of GRB 990123 : multiwavelength afterglow study ⋆
We report on the BeppoSAX data analysis of the afterglow of Gamma–Ray Burst (GRB) 990123, one of the brightest GRBs detected by BeppoSAX. Mainly due to its exceptional brightness, this is the only source for which the Wide Field Cameras have allowed an early detection of the X–ray afterglow between ∼20 and 60 min after the GRB trigger. Besides, again for the first time, high-energy emission fro...
متن کاملAnalysis of Two Scenarios for the Early Optical Emission of the GRB Afterglows 990123 and 021211
The optical light-curves of GRB afterglows 990123 and 021211 exhibit a steep decay at 100–600 seconds after the burst, the decay becoming slower after about 10 minutes. We investigate two scenarios for the fast decaying early optical emission of these GRB afterglows. In the reverse-forward shock scenario, this emission arises in the reverse shock crossing the GRB ejecta, the mitigation of the l...

GRB 990123 established the existence of prompt optical emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The Livermore Optical Transient Imaging System (LOTIS) has been conducting a fully automated search for this kind of simultaneous low energy emission from GRBs since October 1996. Although LOTIS has obtained simultaneous, or near simultaneous, coverage of the error boxes obtained with BATSE, IPN, XTE, ...
